AFC East Quarterbacks Not Named Brady Are Really Bad

It is obviously unfair to ask any mere mortal to perform up to the standard set by one of the greatest quarterbacks ever to play the game. However, the three other teams that play in the AFC East, while not expecting their quarterbacks to be a Tom Brady, must have been expecting (or hoping) for more than they are getting from signal callers Ryan Tannehill, Sam Darnold and Josh Allen.

According to numberFire's Net Expected Points (NEP) metric, these three are instead among the worst players at their position. Through the season's first five weeks, Allen is 31st among 31 quarterbacks with at least 100 drop backs, posting -0.12 Passing NEP per drop back. Tannehill is 28th (-0.06), while Darnold leads this illustrious trio with a -0.03 mark "good" for 27th.

By comparison, Brady -- who is by his standards seemingly off to a slow start -- is eighth with 0.20 Passing NEP per drop back.

While the Buffalo Bills, the Miami Dolphins and the New York Jets will no doubt hope to see improvement in the coming weeks, they are not exactly going out of their way to put games in the hands of their young signal callers. All three teams are in the bottom 10 in terms of pass attempts, with the Jets fifth in overall rushing attempts.
