Doug Martin, RB, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Doug Martin has the leading role back in the Buccaneers backfield! Let's celebrate!

What's that? Backfield-mate Bobby Rainey is outproducing him on both a per rush and per touch basis this year? Seriously, Martin is ranked 43rd in Rushing NEP on a per attempt basis, and still only ranks 39th in Total NEP if we consider his receiving ability. His and Rainey's ranks in the metrics are pretty close (Rainey leads the former by six places, Martin the latter by five). That's pretty damning for Martin, a player fantasy owners had to draft in their first or second rounds too. It's really hard to paint a pretty picture of Doug Martin as a useful fantasy player this season, when he's averaged 2.5 yards per carry and is splitting time to a still fairly significant degree with a lesser talent like Rainey.

On the bright side, Tampa Bay's offense has started to pick up with quarterback Mike Glennon under center.

On the not-so-bright side, they've only gone from the 31st-ranked team in the league by Adjusted Total NEP in Week 3 to the 30th-ranked team in the metric through Week 5. They also face a Ravens' defense that has been top-five in the league against the rush to date (Adjusted Defensive Rushing NEP). Without every-down work like he's used to, and against a stout Ravens' run-plugging front seven, I don't expect to see much "Dougieing" in the end zone on Sunday.
