The Jacksonville Jaguars finally brought an end to the Blake Bortles era when they released the former third overall pick in the first week of the new league year. This was after they signed Nick Foles to a four-year, $88 million contract. The deal contains a whopping $45.125 million guaranteed at signing and would appear to tie Foles to the Jaguars for the next few seasons.

So why are they still in the running for a young quarterback in the NFL Draft? Well, Foles may not be much of an upgrade over Bortles.

Foles was clearly better than Bortles in 2018. Bortles had the fourth-lowest Passing NEP per drop back of any quarterback with at least 300 dropbacks, at -0.03. Foles, as a member of the Philadelphia Eagles, posted a 0.16 mark on his 204 drop backs.

But the past has shown us that Foles is a far different quarterback when not in Eagles colors.

As a member of the St. Louis Rams in 2015, Foles was epically bad on an admittedly terrible offense. His Passing NEP per drop back was a dismal -0.17. While he has a trusted ally in the Jaguars' coaching staff in John DeFilippo, his old quarterback coach with the Eagles, it should not be taken as a guarantee that the Jaguars will get the Foles who tore apart the Minnesota Vikings and New England Patriots in the 2017 postseason.

The Jaguars would be wise to insulate themselves against the possibility of Foles becoming a pumpkin, all while taking steps to develop their next franchise quarterback. After all, the Kansas City Chiefs have shown us that you don't absolutely have to start a rookie quarterback just because you drafted him high.
