New York Giants

It may come as a surprise to some, but Eli Manning didn't have his worst season in 2018. Indeed, he was actually more efficient on a per-play basis than in either of his previous two campaigns.

His Net Expected Points (NEP) per drop back mark was 0.10, a long way up from his -0.03 clip in 2017. (You can learn more about NEP in our glossary). But before Eli enthusiasts start popping the champagne, it should be noted that his 0.10 number from 2018 was the fourth-lowest of the nine quarterbacks with at least 600 drop backs last season. Widening it out a bit, it was "good" for 18th among the 31 quarterbacks with 300 or more drop backs.

The New York Giants hardly put Manning in a position to succeed in this coming season, trading away Odell Beckham. In the last four years, Manning has come to rely on Beckham, befitting a player of Beckham's talent. In games that Beckham has played since 2014, Manning has averaged 271 passing yards, with an average yards per attempt of 7.22. Take away Beckham, and these numbers drop to 230 and 6.48.

Manning will be collecting the eighth-highest quarterback salary in 2019, per OverTheCap.com. He's also 38 years old and has led the Giants to a 25-38 record since 2015. The G-Men passed up a golden opportunity to plan for the future last season by selecting Saquon Barkley with the second overall pick in the draft rather than trading back or taking a quarterback. The Giants should be looking to ensure that they do not repeat their mistake this time around.
