Rashaad Penny is Alive

As someone who invested heavily in Rashaad Penny in dynasty leagues this year, his Week 10 performance came as a serious relief. The Seattle Seahawks drafted Penny in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft with high hopes. In camp, there were reports that he was out of shape and that Chris Carson looked better than he did. In September, Carson got the nod as the lead running back, while Penny fell behind Mike Davis to become the third string back. He was shaping up to be one of the bigger busts of this year's draft classes.

With Carson out in Week 10, Penny finally got an opportunity to show us his stuff. He toted the rock 12 times for a whopping 108 yards and a score against division rivals the Los Angeles Rams. He added 0.5 rushing Net Expected Points (NEP) per carry -- the number of expected points a player adds to their team's total with each carry -- which ranked second among all running backs with five or more carries in Week 10. He played like his first-round draft capital suggested he would.

And really, while Penny started the season very slow, he's been getting better as the season has progressed. He averaged just 3.17 yards per rush attempt in his first five weeks, but has more than doubled that to 6.48 in the last four, including his monstrously efficient performance this week.

Head coach Pete Carroll had a glowing review of Penny after the game, which could lead to further opportunities for the young running back going forward. However, we do need to temper expectations. While his Week 10 performance was exciting, he still logged only 12 touches and had zero targets. Mike Davis had just one fewer carry and caught four passes on five targets. Penny may be in line for a promotion, but there's going to be plenty of competition for touches in that backfield -- especially when Chris Carson returns.
