Aaron Jones Has Run Away with the Job

It's time. Aaron Jones has finally established himself as the bell cow back for the Green Bay Packers, and it was glorious.

We'll never know for certain why Mike McCarthy held out for so long, but it's clear now that Jones has officially become the top dog in that back field. Even despite Jones' costly fumble against the New England Patriots in Week 9, the Packers went back to him in Week 10 instead of teammate Jamaal Williams. And they went back to him over and over and over again.

Jones' 15 carries were the most any Packers back has had since he returned from his two-game suspension at the start of the year. And I'm sure the Packers would have continued giving him touches if they had the chance, but Jones was so hyper-efficient that they didn't have to. Jones was the only back that saw five-plus carries to post a higher Rushing NEP per carry than Rashaad Penny this week, and it showed on his stat line. He took his 15 carries for 145 yards and two touchdowns, while also catching 3 of his 5 targets for another 27 yards.

Even with this increased workload, Jones' efficiency has remained stable -- he's leading the league in yards per carry with 6.8. And it's not that he's just ripping off big gains to buoy his yards per carry numbers. This week, with his highest touch total of the year, he posted a successful run (a run that added expected points to his team's expected points total) on an incredible 60% of his attempts. That means he was posting solid yardage on almost every carry and broke off multiple long gains.

The biggest takeaway from his usage in this game was his share of the team's running back opportunities. He out-carried Jamaal Williams 15 to 3, and he soaked up every running back target. That could be important if the Packers ever end up down in games in the future, especially after they traded away Ty Montgomery.

It only took the Packers a year and a half to do it, but they've finally crowned Aaron Jones the king of their running back room.
