C.J. Spiller, Buffalo Bills

If football was played in a vacuum, C.J. Spiller would be a sure-fire top-five talent at running back. He has the physical attributes that most of us could only dream of. Unfortunately, football isn’t played in a vacuum; it’s played in a highly variable, dangerous environment.

Spiller battled an ankle injury for the majority of last season, and as a result, ceded a large portion of his potential workload to teammate Fred Jackson.

Among 25 running backs with 150-250 carries in 2013, Spiller ranked 15th in Rushing Net Expected Points (NEP), a measure of how effective a player is in terms of real-life points added or subtracted. Jackson ranked third among the same group.

The Bills’ recently re-signed Jackson while trade rumors have been swirling around Spiller. Jackson should retain the goal-line role in Buffalo, and simply offers better draft value going nearly four full rounds later.
