Facing a pair of explosive offenses (Chiefs and Rams) to start the season has made a 2017 top-five fantasy defense in the Los Angeles Chargers flounder to start 2018.
The Chargers have been beaten up through the air, giving up 272 passing yards and 2.7 touchdowns per game. Overall, opponents have scored 93 points, the second-most in the league, and the Chargers have averaged less than 5.0 FanDuel points per game. Not exactly a ringing endorsement so far.
But when faced with a weak opponent, as in Week 2 against the Buffalo Bills, L.A. struck like lightning.
The Bolts scored 10 FanDuel points as they sacked Josh Allen five times while picking him off twice in a road win. It was a top-seven fantasy performance for the defense. This week, at home against a Jimmy Garoppolo-less San Francisco 49ers offense, you should expect nothing less.
The Niners come into the game devastated -- and 10.5-point road underdogs -- as they start a disaster under center in C.J. Beathard. Of the 35 quarterbacks to attempt at least 200 passes in 2017, Beathard ranked 27th in interception percentage (2.7%), 33rd in Success Rate (39.1%), and 34th in Passing Net Expected Points per attempt (-0.15).
San Fran could also be without top running back Matt Breida, as he missed practice with a knee injury. The 49ers go into Sunday with the fourth-lowest implied point total of the week with 18.25.
