The 25 Best NFL Running Back Seasons in the Last 25 Years

Which running backs lay claim to the best single-season performances in recent history?

In the NFL, 25 seasons is a long time. It's the difference between Super Bowl X and Super Bowl XXXV, along with MVPs like Fran Tarkenton and Marshall Faulk.

With that in mind, it's gives plenty of opportunity to produce a number of great rushing seasons. However, the problem in comparing a rushing performance from this past season to one in 1992 is that so much can change from season-to-season and era-to-era.

Thanks to Pro Football Reference and their approximate value (AV) metric, we can do just that. In a nutshell, AV is a single number representing a player's season so that we may compare the value of single-season performances to one another. If you want to know more about what all goes into it, you can find the details here.

Using AV, we can find the top 25 rushing seasons from the last 25 years. There were a few ties along the way, so we used yards per rush to break them.
