3 Daily Fantasy Baseball Stacks for Thursday 4/27/23

Stacking is an integral part of daily fantasy baseball. Correlation drives upside, giving your lineups a slate-winning ceiling when your stacks explode.

This piece will do the digging and the dirty work each day to determine which stacks are worth rostering on FanDuel's main slate. While we want upside, we also need to factor in game theory, especially in a sport as random as baseball.

Our MLB DFS heat map is a quick way to get a feel for the overall slate and which offenses are in a good spot. You can also check out our daily fantasy baseball projections to identify the slate's best bats.

Let's look at the top stacks for this main slate, which starts at 6:40 p.m. EST.

New York Mets

A key part of stacking today is going to be finding value as this slate has some top-notch high-end pitching on it -- namely Gerrit Cole ($11,600) and Shane McClanahan ($11,300).

The New York Mets aren't a huge help in that regard, but they do have some decent midrange options and need to be on the stacking radar as they have the night's top implied total (4.98) for their date with Trevor Williams. The Mets are the only team with an implied total above 4.60.

Since the start of last year, Williams has recorded a meager 21.2% strikeout rate while giving up a 42.4% fly-ball rate. In 2022, lefties mashed Williams for a .376 wOBA and 1.62 homers per nine. Righties had a 45.9% fly-ball rate against him, so we can be flexible.

Pete Alonso ($4,200) and Francisco Lindor ($3,800) are the standout Mets, with Alonso checking in first among all hitters, per our model. If you have the salary, go for them, but as I said at the jump, we need to find lower-salary production tonight given who we have available at pitcher.

Brandon Nimmo ($3,400) will likely hit leadoff while Jeff McNeil ($2,900), Dan Vogelbach ($2,800) and Brett Baty ($2,400) will also swing from the left side. Starling Marte ($2,800) and Mark Canha ($2,800) are righties who are easy to like at their modest salaries.

Minnesota Twins

The Minnesota Twins are facing Zack Greinke and have just two guys salaried above $2,900, so they're perfect for tonight. Minnesota's 4.53 implied total is the slate's second-highest mark.

Despite owning a laughably low 13.1% strikeout rate since the start of 2022, Greinke usually does a nice job of limiting damage. But that's a lot of balls in play, and homers (1.65 per nine) have been an issue for him in this campaign's small sample.

Jorge Polanco ($3,400) and Joey Gallo ($3,400) top the Twins in terms of salary. Gallo has been hitting a meh seventh in the lineup, but he's a particularly excellent option today as strikeouts aren't as big of a worry against Greinke. With Gallo holding a .482 expected wOBA (xwOBA), a bump up the order is likely deserved and would be a welcomed sight.

Byron Buxton ($2,900) may wind up as the night's most popular bat given his enticing salary and huge upside. For those same reasons, Carlos Correa ($2,800) probably won't be far behind Buxton in terms of draft percentage. Trevor Larnach ($2,800) and Max Kepler ($2,600) will be core pieces for me, especially if Kepler hits leadoff, and Jose Miranda is a worthwhile value target.

Detroit Tigers

Hear me out.

After the Twins and Mets, this slate is wiiiide open. While I'm intrigued by the Baltimore Orioles (4.30 implied total) versus Joey Wentz and the New York Yankees (4.38) against Andrew Heaney, the salaries of those two -- especially Baltimore -- make them tough to full-on stack today. There's no such issue with the Detroit Tigers, who are super low in salary across the board.

Of course, there is a reason the Tigers don't have anyone salaried over $2,700 -- they stink on offense. Plus, the pitcher they're facing tonight, Kyle Gibson, just rolled them last week to the tune of 11 punchouts over 6 1/3 innings. If you don't want to mess with the Tigers, I get it, but I think they're a fine place to look for one-offs or mini-stacks.

Riley Greene ($2,700), Kerry Carpenter ($2,600), Nick Maton ($2,400), Zach McKinstry ($2,200) and Akil Baddoo ($2,500) will all hit from the left side. Carpenter, the owner of a .360 xwOBA, intrigues me the most of this bunch.

Spencer Torkelson ($2,700) is also a fine pick. He sports a high fly-ball rate (40.0%) and respectable xwOBA (.328).
