3 Daily Fantasy Baseball Stacks for Friday 9/10/21

Josh Donaldson and the Twins see a struggle rookie at home tonight. Who else is worth a look to stack in DFS?

Stacks are the backbone of cashing daily fantasy baseball lineups. Correlation drives upside, creating the potential to place high or even win GPPs when your selected stacks explode offensively.

This column will do the digging and the dirty work to determine which stacks are worth rostering each day. Scoring upside will fuel the stacks that get the nod. Sometimes that will lead to chalky selections, but contrarian stacks will get their fair share of love too.

In addition to utilizing the touted daily stacks in handbuilt lineups, numberFire premium members can throw these highlighted stacks into an optimized lineup using our DFS Sharpstack tool. Our hitting heat map tool is also available to premium members looking for more stacking options. It provides valuable info such as implied total, park factors, and stats for identifying the quality of the opposing pitcher.

Let's take a look at the top stacks on today's main slate.

Toronto Blue Jays

According to FanGraphs, the Toronto Blue Jays rank second in weighted runs created plus (112 wRC+) and tied for second in isolated power (.197 ISO) against right-handed pitchers this year. As a result, they're a tricky matchup for even the best righties in Major League Baseball. And, contrary to Chris Ellis's 2.16 ERA in 16 and 2/3 innings pitched for the Baltimore Orioles, he's nowhere near elite. Instead, the righty's 5.08 expected fielding independent pitching (xFIP) and 4.65 skill-interactive ERA (SIERA) are much more enticing marks to stack against.

Still, those numbers only scratch the surface for why stacking against Ellis should prove fruitful. So, instead of getting hung up on his work in the big show, I'm honing in on his 6.32 ERA, 4.82 xFIP, and 2.21 homers per nine innings allowed in 57 innings pitched in Triple-A this season. Remarkably, he had higher marks in 79 innings in Triple-A in 2019 as well. Therefore, this looks like a pitcher the Blue Jays are poised to bludgeon.

Speaking of bludgeoning, that's been what Vladimir Guerrero Jr.'s ($4,600) has done to righties' offerings this year, recording a .412 on-base percentage, .318 ISO, and 181 wRC+. My other favorite options from the Blue Jays include Marcus Semien ($4,500) and Alejandro Kirk ($2,700). Also, you can add George Springer ($3,900) to that list if he returns from a three-game absence tending to his knee.

Minnesota Twins

Regression reared its ugly head for Daniel Lynch in his last start. Now his 5.29 ERA is fairly representative of his caliber of pitching this year; it lines up with his 5.06 xFIP and 5.16 SIERA. Pitchers with an ERA north of five and the ERA estimators validating it are exactly the type of pitchers that fantasy players should salivate over when targeting stacks. Therefore, the Minnesota Twins are a dreamy stack tonight.

Circling back to Lynch, the rookie lefty has dominated fellow lefties. Unfortunately for him, he's had zero answers for righties. The 205 right-handed hitters he's faced this year have rocked him for a .492 slugging percentage and .379 weighted on-base average (wOBA). So, predictably, I plan on stacking against him with some of Minnesota's right-handed hitters.

Specifically, I love Josh Donaldson ($3,100) and Byron Buxton ($3,700). The former has a .378 on-base percentage, .235 ISO, and 127 wRC+ against lefties since 2018. Meanwhile, Buxton has a tasty .224 ISO and respectable 112 wRC+ against southpaws during that time. Additionally, those marks have surged to a .269 ISO and 140 wRC+ in 53 plate appearances this year.

Milwaukee Brewers

The Milwaukee Brewers wrap up my favorite stacks tonight against Eli Morgan. The rookie could be in store for the same fate Lynch endured in his last start -- getting humbled by the regression gods. Morgan's 3.75 ERA in his last seven starts is in stark contrast to his 5.21 xFIP and 4.66 SIERA. As a result, I'm all about stacking the Brewers tonight.

Furthermore, Morgan's not dominant against either handedness of hitter. To that point, he's performed best against lefties, but they have a .490 slugging percentage and .326 wOBA. Righties have actually fared even better, recording a .513 slugging percentage and .361 wOBA.

Milwaukee's not a team I normally associate with being stackable from top to bottom. Nonetheless, they are tonight. Some of my favorite options include Luis Urias ($2,200), Omar Narvaez ($2,400), and Avisail Garcia ($3,000). In addition to their scoring potential being appealing, the salary-cap relief they provide enhances it further.
