Alex Avila hasn't had a productive start to 2018, but with a 60.0% hard-hit and 10.0% soft-hit rate against right-handed pitching, it doesn't look like he has actually taken any kind of step back from where he was last year.

In 2017, the catcher rocked right-handed pitching for a ridiculous 54.2% hard-hit and 5.0% soft-hit rate, which translated to a .377 wOBA and .208 isolated slugging (ISO). Getting numbers like that at just $300 above the minimum is a steal regardless of matchup.

Making things even better, the Diamondbacks boast the main slate's highest implied total (4.63) tonight. Giants righty Chris Stratton has only managed a 4.92 skill-interactive ERA (SIERA) through his first three seasons in the majors, and while his 2.60 ERA looks good on the surface, he's allowing a 42.6% hard-hit rate with only a 6.4% soft-hit rate. Avila's power gives him huge upside here.
