It's another hot day in Texas, and the Rangers have a friendly 5.15 implied team total against Justin Verlander. Before you get all excited, though, keep in mind that Verlander has a 3.62 SIERA, 28.5% strikeout rate, and 25.0% hard-hit rate over his last five starts.
Thus, given his recent play, it's difficult to see this game getting out of hand, and limits the appeal of the powerful yet strikeout-prone Joey Gallo. Although Verlander does give up a lot of fly balls (42.5% rate), he tends to keep the ball in the park (1.06 homers allowed per nine innings), and his recent spike in punchouts doesn't bode well for Gallo and his 37.1% strikeout rate.
Gallo has shown immense power, so he can be considered a boom-or-bust option in tournaments thanks to the summer heat in Arlington. Overall, though, he's just better suited against low-strikeout opponents.
