Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton completed 19-of-28 passes for 335 yards, two touchdowns and an interception, also rushing 10 times for 47 yards and two more touchdowns in the Panthers' 49-15 rout of the Arizona Cardinals in Sunday's NFC Championship Game.
What It Means:
Throwing darts out of the gate, Newton's first touchdown went to Corey Brown from 86 yards out on a poorly-covered pass deep down the middle. Newton was well protected as Arizona's blitzes failed to get home versus Carolina's dominant offensive line. Newton's first rushing score came from a half-yard out as he extended the ball just past the stripe late in the first half. His lone miscue was a late second-quarter interception on an errant throw intended for Ed Dickson, but Kurt Coleman returned the favor by picking off Carson Palmer on the very next play. Newton put the Cardinals away on back-to-back powerful quarterback keepers in the third frame, the first of which gained 11 yards on third-and-10, and the second put Carolina up 34-7 on a 12-yard score. Newton dropped the dagger to Devin Funchess with a fourth-quarter five-yard touchdown. The 49 points scored by Carolina set a new NFC Championship Game record. Newton will enter Super Bowl 50 having accounted for an incredible 50 touchdowns in the 2015-'16 season.
Among passers with at least 100 drop backs, Newton ended the regular season ranked eighth in Passing Net Expected Points (NEP) per drop back. Against Arizona, he accounted for 5.77 Rushing NEP and 11.77 Passing NEP, totaling 17.55 NEP for the day. He'll have a tough matchup in the Super Bowl as the Denver Broncos rank first in Adjusted Defensive NEP per play.
