It's true that Cutler had a higher Passing NEP total than Alex Smith in the fourth quarter last season, but he also threw 33 more passes in the quarter. Because quarterbacks are so efficient to begin with in today's NFL, it's kind of hard to lose points with each attempt.

Smith actually edges out Cutler by 0.01 Passing NEP per drop back, giving him the ninth best rate in the league last season. A big reason for this was ball security -- among the 31-quarterback subset, he was one of five quarterbacks to throw just one fourth-quarter interception.
