C.J. Spiller, RB, New Orleans Saints

Current ADP: 6.01

Earliest Willing to Draft: 4th Round

I recently debated who is more worthy of your draft pick between C.J. Spiller and Mark Ingram in PPR leagues. And the more I think about it, the more I lean toward the Spiller side of the debate.

Signing with the New Orleans Saints figures to offer Spiller a chance at a career renaissance, which I fully believe he will achieve.

Spiller is moving to an offense, guided by coach Sean Payton, that loves to get running backs involved in the passing game. Since 2006, the Saints have directed 176 targets to running backs on average each season.

Given Spiller’s electricity in the open field, we shouldn't be surprised if he got 100 targets. With a career catch rate of 77%, and Drew Brees tossing him the rock, that rate could be improved upon, too.

Moreover, I don’t buy that Spiller will be relegated to a change-of-pace, passing-down role only. Spiller’s 2012 campaign came replete with an insanely efficient 0.14 Rushing NEP per rush, which was the 14th best season in terms of efficiency since 2000 among backs with over 200 carries.

Running behind a stellar offensive line protecting a hall of fame quarterback seems like a good recipe to regain that efficiency that was lost the past two seasons.

If Spiller is even half that efficient in this offense as he was in 2012, Spiller could get more touches than initially anticipated.

Spiller’s floor, which could be about 80 targets and 120 carries, is more than enough to produce RB2 value. But Spiller’s borderline RB1 upside is what makes it worthwhile to get him in the late-fourth, early-fifth round range to make sure you get him in a PPR league.
