C.J. Anderson, RB, Denver Broncos

The last time I said to pump the brakes on a newly-minted starting running back for Denver in a bad matchup, Ronnie Hillman went crazy with four straight weeks of double-digit fantasy points. You know what, though? It was the wrong call for the right reasons, so I am going back to the well here: do not start C.J. Anderson this week. He's a bruising running back and can slough off defenses like a battering ram shakes off doors, but we have only seen one week of real production from the third-stringer in Denver. Does he have talent? Absolutely. Does a running back in a Peyton Manning-led offense almost always have value? For sure. But...

Is he going up against one of the stingiest run defenses in the league? Yes. The St. Louis Rams currently reside as a top-ten defense against the run in Adjusted Defensive Rushing NEP. "But C.J. has showed us he can dominate!" Au contraire: the Oakland Raiders, whom Anderson just dropped 22 standard fantasy points on, rank a paltry 16th in this defensive metric. There could be great value in Anderson this week, but with Montee Ball also tentatively returning, I don't want to play personnel chicken with Broncos head coach John Fox. Save yourself the headache and stash C.J. for later.
