Rashaad Penny, RB, Seattle Seahawks

I’ll admit it: I was holding out hope here. When the Seattle Seahawks selected running back Rashaad Penny in the first round of this year’s NFL Draft, it seemed like a fair expectation that Penny would take over lead back duties for the ‘Hawks sooner rather than later. Instead, reports from training camp all summer told us that 2017 breakout Chris Carson had solidified his hold on the starting job, and that Penny was injured and out of shape.

Months later, not much has changed, except that Penny has now fallen behind even Mike Davis in the Seahawks’ pecking order for running back touches. It was Davis -- not Penny -- who got the start and racked up 124 yards from scrimmage and 2 scores on 25 touches when Carson was injured in Week 4. It was Davis -- not Penny -- who got 14 touches in Week 5 as the second back in the rotation. It was Penny, however, who played a single special teams snap in Week 5, seeing no time on offense.

Penny is still likely the back of the future for Seattle, but the future isn’t coming any time soon. Carson and Davis have the job wrapped up for now.
