Detroit Lions

The Los Angeles Rams' offensive line was in shambles last season, and it helped result in the ouster of head coach Jeff Fisher and immense struggles for running back Todd Gurley and quarterback Jared Goff. The man who served as the scapegoat of many of those struggles -- Greg Robinson -- was promptly shipped out of town during the offseason.

He's now in line to start at left tackle for the Detroit Lions.

The team's regular starter there, Taylor Decker, had shoulder surgery in June to repair a torn labrum he suffered during offseason workouts. Decker is out of a sling but is still expected to miss the first part of the season.

That leaves Robinson to work with the first team in protecting Matthew Stafford's blindside. If 2016 is any indication, that's bad news. On a per-drop back basis, only the Cleveland Browns lost more NEP due to sacks than Robinson's Rams, a dubious distinction that led to several benchings for Robinson during the year. On top of that, the Rams were 31st in Success Rate when rushing to Robinson's side.

It's worth noting that Robinson has been generating some positive buzz recently with head coach Jim Caldwell saying Robinson was "solid" in the first preseason game. That does help, but does it erase all the negatives leading up to this point?

The Lions have been working hard to improve up front, drafting offensive linemen in the first round two of the past three seasons (including Decker in 2016). Once Decker comes back, it's possible they start to reap the benefits of that dedication. But for the start of the season, it may be best to be a tad wary of this offense as a whole.
