Demaryius Thomas Is the Top Dog Again

One of the interesting trends that emerged early on in the season was Emmanuel Sanders coming on as the number-one receiver on the Denver Broncos.

Perhaps it shouldn't have been considered a complete impossibility this offseason. After all, Demaryius Thomas had just come off his worst statistical season since 2010. And with a new quarterback in town in Trevor Siemian, the possibility of another capable receiver getting more looks than Thomas was always in the cards.

In fact, Sanders received more targets than Thomas in each of the first five weeks of the season. But since Week 6, Thomas has registered double-digit targets in every single game.

SplitTargets/GameYards/GameTD
Emmanuel Sanders (Week 1-5)10.274.63
Emmanuel Sanders (Week 6-10)8.8590
Demaryius Thomas (Week 1-5)6.876.23
Demaryius Thomas (Week 6-10)10.259.42

While the Broncos' offensive struggles have impacted both Sanders' and Thomas’ fantasy output in recent weeks, the trend is clear that Thomas has reclaimed his position as the top Broncos receiver.

In the last five weeks, Thomas went from registering an absurdly low (for him) 6.8 targets per game to a much more palatable 10.2 targets per game, which is the exact amount Sanders was receiving in the first five games of the season.

And with Thomas registering a stellar 8-catch, 87-yard, 1-touchdown game against the New Orleans Saints on Sunday and the Broncos' offense breaking out of their more recent slump, expect Trevor Siemian to continue feeding Thomas as his top target moving forward.
