Last week, Philip Rivers’ salary dropped to $7,300 in a tough matchup with the Denver Broncos. He performed better than expected with 267 passing yards and 2 touchdowns and actually reached cash game value, a rare feat against the Broncos’ defense.

Now, with the San Diego Chargers as a five-point home favorite against the Tennessee Titans, Rivers’ salary has jumped $1,000. Despite that price increase, history suggests that Rivers could be a worthwhile play in cash games this week. Over the last three seasons, Rivers has scored two times his salary on FanDuel 71.4 percent of the time when his team is favored.

He will need 16.6 FanDuel points to hit that cash game goal this week, a total he’s only reached in two games this season. However, the Titans allow the fourth fewest FanDuel points to opposing running backs, which means Rivers should contribute to a majority of the Chargers’ 26.25 implied team total on Sunday.

Yet, despite the high team total and historical success when his team is favored, Rivers’ upside is capped with the slew of injuries to his weapons -- Keenan Allen and Danny Woodhead already lost for the year, while Travis Benjamin and Tyrell Williams are dealing with their own ailments. Add in the steep hike in his price, and it’s not advisable to pay up for Rivers this week.
