Angels say Shohei Ohtani's (UCL sprain) diagnosis hasn't changed
Los Angeles Angels starting pitcher/designated hitter Shohei Ohtani's diagnosis of a Grade 2 UCL sprain in his right elbow has had "no changes," Angels general manager Billy Eppler told Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic on Monday.
Eppler added that neither the club's physicians nor medical staff have recommended Tommy John surgery or said that it's likely. This comes in response to a Monday morning report from ESPN's Pedro Gomez, who said that Ohtani would likely need to undergo the procedure, which would sideline the 23-year-old until the 2020 season. Ohtani will be re-evaluated in three weeks.
Ohtani was batting .289/.372/.535 with 6 homers and 20 RBI in 129 plate appearances while also posting a 3.10 ERA and 1.14 WHIP with 61 strikeouts in 49 1/3 innings pitched this season.
