Astros' Yuli Gurriel (hand) undergoing surgery on Wednesday
Houston Astros first baseman Yuli Gurriel is undergoing hamate bone surgery in his left hand, and will likely be out 5-6 weeks.
Gurriel was flown back to Houston to have his hand examined after experiencing discomfort on Monday, and will undergo surgery on Wednesday. Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow said Gurriel will likely be out 5-6 weeks, putting him in danger of missing the start of the season. Marwin Gonzalez should take over as the primary first baseman, but Tyler White, A.J. Reed, and J.D. Davis could also see time this spring.
In 2017, Gurriel hit .299/.332/.486 with 18 home runs, 75 RBI, 69 runs, and 3 stolen bases in 564 plate appearances.
