Barry Zito

Athletics call up veteran southpaw Barry Zito

The Oakland Athletics purchased the contract of LHP Barry Zito from Triple-A Nashville.

What It Means:

This is a homecoming story for the former Cy Young Award winner, as Zito was drafted by the A's and pitched for them from 2000 to 2006. He hasn't pitched in the majors since 2013, throwing 133.1 innings for the San Francisco Giants.

Zito has made 22 starts for Nashville this season, posting a respectable 3.46 earned run average, although his fielder independent pitching of 4.64 suggests he has been lucky. Control is still a problem for the lefty, as he has a walk percentage of 10.2 in his 138 innings pitched for Nashville. Zito's role on the A's is not yet clear, but it would be fun to see him get a start.
