Cardinals' Alex Reyes will receive second opinion for elbow
St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Alex Reyes has a partial tear of the ulnar collateral ligament in his elbow and will go for a second opinion, according to Jim Bowden of ESPN.com.
Tommy John surgery is "likely," per Bowden. The main concern is what the extent of any new damage may be, as Reyes dealt with a previous elbow strain back in 2013. Either way, the 22-year-old right-hander is facing a lengthy absence after showing plenty of promise during his first big league action last season. Michael Wacha is now in line to open the year as the fifth starter in the Cardinals' rotation.
Reyes excelled during his first stint in the majors, as he posted a 1.57 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 27.5 strikeout percentage across 46 innings (five starts) in 2016.
