Drew Pomeranz strikes out 11, but takes loss for Red Sox

Boston Red Sox pitcher Drew Pomeranz took a loss against the Tampa Bay Rays on Thursday, despite allowing just two runs and striking out 11 in six-plus innings.

What It Means:

Pitching in a 1-1 game, Pomeranz allowed a single and a run-scoring double to begin the seventh inning and was thus lifted. That ended up being the deciding run, as the Rays won 2-1. Pomeranz has now thrown a career high 146 1/3 innings this season, so it's worth pondering if he will start to fade down the stretch, but he's been solid recently after a rough first three starts since joining the Red Sox.

After Thursday's performance, Pomeranz maintained his 2.95 ERA and lowered his xFIP to 3.71, while increasing his strikeout percentage to 27.0 percent (league average is 21.0 percent). We project him to record a 3.44 ERA and a 1.17 WHIP over the rest of the year.
