Tampa Bay inks Kevin Jepsen to major league deal

The Tampa Bay Rays signed reliever Kevin Jepsen to a one-year contract.

What It Means:

Jepsen will earn a pro-rated portion of the big league minimum, while the Minnesota Twins are covering what remains of his $5.3 million salary for 2016. Jepsen started the 2015 season with the Rays before they traded him to the Twins in July. Minnesota released him this season after he posted a 6.16 ERA in 30 2/3 innings. Jepsen will likely pitch in low-leverage situations to begin, but with Tampa Bay owning the 13th-worst combined xFIP among relievers at 4.22, there is opportunity for the 31-year-old right-hander to get back into high-leverage scenarios.

Jepsen's 5.33 xFIP with the Twins was not much better than his ERA, and his 15.60 strikeout percentage this season is on pace to be a career-worst. Maybe a change of scenery will help him return to his career numbers of a 3.83 xFIP and 21.70 strikeout percentage.
