Phillies' Jeanmar Gomez nets 16th save on Wednesday

Philadelphia Phillies closer Jeanmar Gomez nailed down his 16th save of the season Wednesday in the Phillies' 4-2 defeat of the Miami Marlins.

What It Means:

Gomez retired all three batters he faced in the top of the ninth inning, striking out Giancarlo Stanton to end it. Gomez leads the major leagues in saves (by a three-save margin) and the Phillies can take over sole possession of first place in the National League East if the Washington Nationals lose Wednesday night. What in the world is going on?

Gomez lowered his ERA to 2.66, but his 4.03 xFIP is significantly higher and he has a mediocre 17.7 strikeout percentage. Still, he's blown just one save and leads baseball in this category. Our models currently project Gomez to record a 3.06 ERA with an 18.6 strikeout percentage and 20 more saves over the remaining course of the season.
