Felix Doubront to have Tommy John surgery for Athletics
Oakland Athletics pitcher Felix Doubront is scheduled to undergo Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery on Tuesday.
Doubront was supposed to open the 2016 season as the A's fifth starter, but he tore his ulnar collateral ligament in late March and will now be sidelined for the next 12-15 months. It's awful news for the 28-year-old left-hander, who had been hoping to reinvigorate his career in Oakland. He'll be a non-tender candidate next winter.
Doubront posted a 4.31 xFIP in 75 1/3 innings last season for the Toronto Blue Jays and the Athletics. His 17.1 strikeout percentage was below the league average of 20.4 percent. We had projected Doubront to record a 4.61 ERA and 14.8 strikeout percentage this season, but unfortunately he won't be taking the mound anytime soon.
