Cardinals sign Brayan Peña to two-year deal
The St. Louis Cardinals signed catcher Brayan Peña to a two-year contract.
The financial details of the deal have not yet been released. Peña offers the Cardinals a slight upgrade over backup catcher Tony Cruz and his career .220 batting average, but it's likely he won't see significant playing time unless incumbent catcher Yadier Molina gets hurt.
Peña hit .273/.334/.324 in 367 plate appearances for the Cincinnati Reds this season, without any home runs, although he hit 5 in 2014. Although Peña showed virtually no power this season, he had just a .051 Isolated Power, but he rarely struck out, posting a strikeout percentage of just 9.3.
