Michael Pineda, P, New York Yankees

On a day when Max Scherzer will be a popular play for his matchup at the San Diego Padres, Michael Pineda is an intriguing contrarian option. Pineda will be on the road for a meeting with the Minnesota Twins.

Minnesota has one of baseball’s weaker lineups, ranking 25th in wOBA (.303), 20th in long balls (70), 19th in ISO (.146) and 23rd in strikeout rate (22.8%).

Injuries have plagued Pineda throughout his career, but as the owner of a career 3.31 SIERA, he’s been pretty darn good when he’s been healthy. Pineda is sporting a career-worst 3.54 SIERA this year to go with a 24.4% strikeout rate -- a career high -- and 5.9% walk rate. He’s being burned by a .371 BABIP, which is significantly higher than his .298 career average.

Pineda has picked up his game in June, posting a 3.04 xFIP and 26.3% strikeout rate this month. He’s been better away from home, too. He owns a 3.17 xFIP on the road, compared to a 3.87 xFIP at homer-happy Yankee Stadium.
