Clay Buchholz, Boston Red Sox

Speaking of good stories, a healthy (and still mangy) Clay Buchholz is fun to watch. He has book-ended two mediocre performances with goose eggs and should continue to see the fruits of his labor if his FIP and BABIP cooperate accordingly.

The Baltimore Orioles travel to Fenway to face Buchholz Wednesday. The O’s are a markedly better home team than road as witnessed by their plus-77 home-road runs scored differential. Their 111 runs scored away from Camden Yards is the worst in the American League and third worst overall. Baltimore’s hitting slash line of .232/.292/.362 is in the bottom third of baseball and have an alarming 3.57 strikeout-to-walk ratio on the road.

The O’s have mustered 76 road extra-base hits, second worst in the AL and 18 hits below league average. You would think a team that cannot drive the ball would try to get runners in scoring position running the bases -- not Baltimore. The team has 32 stolen base attempts all season and 13 have been away from Baltimore. Of those 13, nine have been successful.

Buchholz has only seen four stolen base attempts in 86.0 innings pitched, a good sign that runners are not seeing opportunities to run against. It is tough to imagine the Orioles trying to generate runners in scoring position against Clay.
