Brett Gardner, OF, New York Yankees

Manning the leadoff spot 10 straight days for a New York Yankees team that ranks eighth in hard-hit rate (39.1%) over the last week, Brett Gardner seems like an obvious choice for an outfield spot. But locked into a lefty-lefty matchup with Gio Gonzalez taking the ball this evening, it could be time to leave Gardner in the player pool.

Gonzalez has been absolutely filthy against same-sided bats. Going back to the start of the 2017 season, Gio has quieted them to the tune of a .226 wOBA, 1.34 ERA, 24.8% strikeout rate, and 23.1% hard-hit rate. It's not a small sample either, given a sample size of 230 batters faced.

Gardner isn't exactly dinging lefties himself. He's posted a .206 batting average and 20.1% hard-hit rate in this split in 206 plate appearances since the start of the 2017 season.
