Matt Carpenter, 3B, St. Louis Cardinals

Judging by the surface numbers alone, you might assume that Matt Carpenter is still shaking off the rust from his lost 2017 season, with the St. Louis Cardinals utility man sputtering out the gate to a .179 average and middling .673 OPS. The underlying metrics show a different story, though, with the shrewd switch-hitter boasting a 21.6% walk rate, smacking a respectable 27.8% line-drive rate, and minimizing his soft contact to 5.3% percent.

Carpenter's .247 isolated power against right handed pitching over the last two seasons should have the attention of daily players, especially with the Cardinals lined up to face shaky righties like Jhoulys Chacin, Sal Romano, and Tyler Mahle in Week 2. Carpenter is in a great spot to break out.
