James McCann, C, Detroit Tigers

FanDuel Price: $2,500

On a slate devoid of many intriguing catching options, you might see James McCann's low price, shrug, click on him, and then move on. And sure, he has a 45.5% hard-hit rate and 7 bombs, so you could do worse, right?

More often than not, taking punt plays simply because of their price tends not to work out very well. (They're low-priced for a reason, after all.) Often, the catcher position is one that gets more leeway in this regard because of the overall lack of hitting talent.

Still, McCann is a poor fit tonight since he doesn't hit righties nearly as well as lefties. The difference in career wOBA is a stark .250 to .378. Plus, he also hits out of the lowly eighth spot, further devaluing him.

Opposing pitcher Michael Fiers is unlikely to do him any favors, either, as he's striking out righties 24.4% of the time, which is in line with his career rate (23.0%).

It's worth noting that Fiers is giving up his share of hard contact to righty bats, though, and McCann is showing improvement against same-side pitchers this year, so he still has value in a potential Detroit Tigers stack. Outside of that strategy, though, you're better off going with someone with the platoon advantage, and hitting higher in the order.
