Nate Karns has a 4.54 SIERA through 12 1/3 innings so far this season, and has uncharacteristically struggled to get strikeouts with just a 15.4% strikeout rate, well below the 24.2% rate he had last year. He's never been a stranger to walks, though, with an 11.5% walk rate in the early going.

This might seem like a good opportunity to use Rougned Odor at a fairly modest price point, but despite Karns' early struggles, he historically has rather prominent reverse splits.

Although he's pretty average against righties, when it comes to southpaws, Karns has a career 25.9% strikeout rate, 12.8% walk rate and 29.8% hard-hit rate. That doesn't bode well for the free-swinging Odor, who struck out 21.4% of the time last year. He also only had a 3.0% walk rate, so he's less likely to take advantage if Karns is struggling with his control.

Given that it's only been two starts, we should expect Karns to get his strikeouts back up to his career norms, making Odor a suboptimal play.
