Canterbury Park Horse Racing Picks for Thursday 9/17/20

It's a great time to dive into horse racing and TVG gives you the chance to do just that.

Starting at 5:05 p.m. EST, we have 13 races at Canterbury Park. Using TVG and Guaranteed Tip Sheet as guide, here are some of the best bets.

As always, check the program for scratches and changes.

(I will reference Equibase's Speed Figure in selected races, which tells you how fast a horse has been running in each of its races -- adjusted for track, distances, and conditions.)

Bubba Bob, Race 5

FanDuel Racing Odds: 12/1

Race 1 is a Maiden Special Weight at 1 mile and 70 yards on the Turf. The favorite, Frank the Mayor (2/1), finished a distant second a month ago and 1-length in front of J.P. Warrior, who is now scratched along with three other colts -- Champs Success, Semi Charmed Day, and Mischievous Mo.

Frank the Mayor is ridden by Canterbury’s leading rider, Ry Eikleberry, whose 75 wins and 23% win rate lead all jockeys. He tries turf for the first time and has hit the board in 2-of-3 starts.

Bubba Bob (12/1) is a gelding with a solid work tab by a leading trainer, Francisco Bravo. He finished second two races back, running near the lead and beating eight horses.

Paint I Ain’t (9/2) is a closer who is 0-for-7 and lacking speed figures with most of these runners.

Westa Waverly, Race 8

FanDuel Racing Odds: 5/2

Race 8 is the Shakopee Junvenile Stakes for 2-year-olds sprinting 6 furlongs. The favorite is Heart Full of Soul (9/5), who won his debut five weeks ago with a slow (64) speed figure. Guaranteed Tip Sheet projects Westa Waverly (5/2) to win followed by Edge to Edge (9/2).

Westa Waverly didn’t handle a sloppy track eight days ago as the favorite, but he’s right back having won a stakes race wire-to-wire by 4-lengths last month with a solid 82 speed figure.

Ry Eikleberry is riding Strong Rules (4/1) for top trainer Joel Berndt, who has won his first training title. Strong Rules won on debut six weeks ago and now faces winners.

Keller’s Gold and Slews Hymm, Race 9

FanDuel Racing Odds: 8/1 and 9/2

Race 9 is the $50,000 Tom Metzen HBPA Stakes at 6 furlongs. This is a tough race to call. Five-year-old Slews Hymm (9/2) made his career debut in July and is 3-for-3 entering his final race of the meet with top jockey Ry Eikleberry aboard.

Guaranteed Tip Sheet projects The Tabulator (9/5) to win as favorite, but he hasn’t raced since May. The Tabulator is the top speed in the race and has won seven times in 16 starts but finished sixth in his only start at Canterbury last summer.

King of the Court (5/2) has won two straight at Canterbury with top speed figures, including a 99 ESF when running down Keller’s Gold (8/1) in the stretch as a heavy favorite. Keller’s Gold won his previous race over the track by 5-lengths with a 99 speed figure and offers value. Trainer Carlos Moreno’s runners have won three times with six in-the-money finishes the past five weeks.
