49ers turn head coach search from Josh McDaniels to Kyle Shanahan

New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels is bowing out of consideration for the San Francisco 49ers' head-coaching vacancy, CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora reports.

What It Means:

According to La Canfora, McDaniels is taking his name out of consideration for "personal" reasons, and it's "not a reflection" on the 49ers. With New England advancing this deep into the playoffs, the San Francisco job is the only one left open. McDaniels is better off riding it out another year and seeing what next offseason brings. ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the 49ers are "honing in on" Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan for their head-coaching vacancy. Seattle Seahawks offensive line coach Tom Cable is the only other known candidate for the job. If they whiff on Shanahan, things could again be a total disaster in Santa Clara.

It's no surprise that the Niners are looking for an offensive-minded coach; they ranked fifth-worst this season in opponent-adjusted Offensive Net Expected Points per play.
