Terence Newman defies Vikings' coaching staff in Week 16 loss

The Minnesota Vikings' defensive backs went against head coach Mike Zimmer's game plan from the first series of Saturday's Week 16 loss to the Green Bay Packers, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

What It Means:

The game plan called for cornerback Xavier Rhodes to shadow wide receiver Jordy Nelson but the Vikings decided early in the week to go off script. Terence Newman asked to cover Nelson during the first half but Zimmer told him to "do what you're supposed to do." Newman shadowed Nelson anyway and got burned for two early touchdowns. Rhodes eventually moved to Nelson and shut him down for just two second-half catches. Saturday's mutiny against Zimmer marks a fitting end to what has been a disappointing year for the Vikings.

The Vikings' secondary allowed Green Bay to rack up 15.62 Net Expected Points on just 39 passing attempts in Week 16, per numberFire Live.
