Dallas considering adding Nick Foles, trading for backup

The Dallas Cowboys are "considering" signing free agent quarterback Nick Foles, but will also explore the trade market for a backup signal-caller, reports ESPN's Ed Werder.

What It Means:

Foles is represented by the same agent as head coach Jason Garrett, offensive coordinator Scott Linehan and starting quarterback Tony Romo, so the two sides would be extremely familiar with each other. The Cowboys will still likely want to get reads on Josh McCown (Cleveland Browns) and Mike Glennon (Tampa Bay Buccaneers), as well as seeing what else might be available. However, a trade would require giving up draft picks, while signing Foles would just cost Jerry Jones money. Expect the former Philadelphia Eagles and St. Louis Rams quarterback to sign with Dallas and replace Kellen Moore (broken ankle) as Tony Romo's backup.

Among the 46 quarterbacks with 100 drop backs last season, Foles ranked 43rd with -0.17 Passing Net Expected Points per drop back.
