Patriots waive running back James Robinson

The New England Patriots waived running back James Robinson.

What It Means:

Robinson signed a contract worth up to $8 million over 2 years with the Patriots earlier this season, but the deal was primarily incentive-based. Robinson fell out of favor with the Jaguars in 2022 and was traded to the Jets partway through the season, but couldn't beat out Zonovan Knight for opportunities in that backfield. He'll look for a new team while the Pats roll with a depth chart of Pierre Strong and Kevin Harris behind Rhamondre Stevenson.

Robinson was able to break off multiple long runs in the early part of the season with the Jaguars, but his 3.9 yards-per-carry mark was the lowest of his career. The former UDFA made his mark in his first two seasons in Jacksonville while rushing for 1,837 yards, though the Achilles injury he suffered at the end of 2021 may have sapped some of his earlier explosiveness.
