Vikings sign Harrison Smith to five-year contract extension

The Minnesota Vikings signed free safety Harrison Smith to a five-year, $51.25 million extension through 2021.

What It Means:

The deal includes $15.278 million in fully guaranteed money including a $10 million signing bonus. The $10.25 million average makes Smith the highest-paid safety in the league, although Eric Berry is set to make $10.8 million if he plays under the terms of his franchise tag. A playmaker on the back end, Smith has recorded 12 interceptions, scooped two fumbles and scored four defensive touchdowns in 53 career games. He is now under contract through his age-32 season.

The Vikings ranked 13th in Adjusted Defensive Net Expected Points per play in 2015.
