Dolphins to give Mario Williams $8 million per season

The Miami Dolphins' deal with free agent defensive end Mario Williams should be finalized on Tuesday and will be worth $8 million per season, NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports.

What It Means:

The offseason is the Dolphins' postseason. Their March dynasty is approaching Belichick-esque levels. Now 31, Williams was widely accused of quitting last season before being released by the Buffalo Bills last week. Williams is one of the best pass rushers of his generation and is well worth a flier, but it will be a risky deal for the perennially cap-strapped 'Fins. His addition will almost certainly mean the release of Cameron Wake or the removal of the transition tag on Olivier Vernon.

Williams piled up 14.5 sacks in 2014 but regressed to five sacks last season at age 30. He turned 31 in January. Miami sorely needs defensive help. The Dolphins finished 30th in Adjusted Defensive Net Expected Points (NEP) per play in 2015.
