Dolphins, Mario Williams nearing deal

The Miami Dolphins are the "clear front-runners to sign" free agent defensive end Mario Williams, Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio reports.

What It Means:

Florio reports there is a "push" to get the deal done Tuesday. Bleacher Report's Jason Cole reports the impending deal "may be worth roughly $8 million per year." A deal with Williams could prompt the Dolphins to rescind Olivier Vernon's transition tag or, more likely, release veteran Cameron Wake, who is scheduled to count $9.8 million against the cap.

Williams piled up 14.5 sacks in 2014 but regressed to five sacks last season at age 30. He turned 31 in January. Miami sorely needs defensive help. The Dolphins finished 30th in Adjusted Defensive Net Expected Points (NEP) per play in 2015.
