Rams embracing open competition in backfield
Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay said "we feel we've got three really good backs" while discussing the backfield.
"What does that mean in terms of the distribution of carries," McVay asked rhetorically. "I think that's to be determined based on how things play themselves out." McVay is referring to 2020 second-round pick Cam Akers, 2019 third-round pick Darrell Henderson, and five-year backup Malcolm Brown. Todd Gurley saw an average snap share of 75.0 percent as the Rams' lead back last season, but the Rams may opt for more of a committee approach if an alpha doesn't emerge. Brown and Henderson could get the advantage over the first couple of months, with Akers eventually taking over as the season progresses.
The Rams were 26th in numberFire's advanced team rushing metric last season. Brown recorded -0.01 Rushing Net Expected Points per attempt and a 40.6 success rate. Henderson averaged -0.15 Rushing NEP per attempt with a 38.5 success rate.
