Coby White, North Carolina Tar Heels

From one Tobacco Road rival to the other, North Carolina freshman Coby White is an extraordinary scorer in his own right. He's more of a point guard type, but he's certainly of the shoot-first mindset, taking 27.2% of his team's offensive plays for 16.3 points on 12.6 attempts a night. He has been very solid from downtown, as he's knocked down 2.4 shots on 6.6 attempts (36.0%), and that shooting stroke breeds efficiency across the board, with the highly touted recruit hitting 81.4% of his attempts from the charity stripe.

White uses his confidence to be aggressive on the offensive end, which is quite the contrast from most other Tar Heels (namely the smooth Cameron Johnson). Because of that, Roy Williams needs him to be out on the floor for 30-plus minutes a night in the tournament. He played the fourth-most minutes per game (28.2) over the course of the regular season, but he played 1.6 more in ACC play, and since the turn to March he's at 35.4 in five games (36 and 38 in his two ACC tournament games).

All that is to say that if UNC is going to go far he's the reason why. While the Heels' depth gives them an edge other traditional powerhouses don't, White is the closest thing to a superstar.

The 1-seeded Tar Heels start off their schedule with a matchup against the 16-seeded Iona Gaels in Columbus on Friday night.
