Edwin Diaz close to regaining Mariners' closer role
Seattle Mariners reliever Edwin Diaz is close to regaining closer duties, manager Scott Servais confirmed.
Servais was impressed with his performance Friday (2 hits, 2 strikeouts, 2 innings pitched) but said he'd like to see one more clean outing before putting Diaz back in the ninth inning. "I feel very confident that if he keeps moving in that direction, he'll be back doing the ninth inning solo and we can get back to him being our anchor," he said.
Diaz has posted a 4.67 ERA, 28.9 percent strikeout rate, and 13.2 percent walk rate in 17 1/3 innings pitched in 2017.
