Zack Wheeler scuffles in first start for Mets since 2014
In his first start since 2014, New York Mets starting pitcher Zack Wheeler allowed five runs over four innings Friday in a loss to the Miami Marlins.
Wheeler had a strong first inning, but he struggled from there. He gave up six hits in all, including a homer to Christian Yelich. His velocity — which was comfortably in the mid-90s in the first inning — also faded a bit as the game moved along, but the good news is that he walked just one batter while striking out four. Wheeler is bound to have some peaks and valleys as he shakes the rust.
Our models project Wheeler for 67 1/3 more innings pitched over the course of the year, with a 3.61 ERA, 1.39 WHIP, 21.9 percent strikeout rate, and 10.3 percent walk rate.
