Mariners' Taijuan Walker undergoes surgery on ankle

Seattle Mariners starting pitcher Taijuan Walker underwent arthroscopic surgery Monday to remove a bone fragment from his right ankle.

What It Means:

Walker began experiencing ankle problems in June and his performance seemed to suffer as a result. He mustered just a 5.21 ERA in the second half of the season after a 3.66 ERA heading into the break. Assuming he's at 100 percent for the start of next year, he should provide more consistent results in 2017.

Walker had a rough 4.22 ERA in 2016, and his 4.13 SIERA was the worst mark of his four-year career. He also recorded a 20.8 percent strikeout rate and 6.5 percent walk rate across 134 1/3 innings.
