Cardinals' Zach Duke undergoes Tommy John surgery
St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Zach Duke underwent Tommy John surgery and also had his flexor muscle repaired last week.
There was nothing known about Duke dealing with elbow trouble, so this is a shocker. His arm apparently couldn't keep up with the career-high 81 appearances he just turned in this season, and now he'll be sidelined for all of 2017 before hitting free agency the following winter.
Duke's 2.36 ERA was his best since 2012, while his 3.52 xFIP was an improvement on his 4.15 career-average. He recorded a 26.4 strikeout percentage and 1.26 WHIP across 61 innings this past year.
